How a rainbow is born
A rainbow appears when sunlight passes through raindrops with the Sun behind the observer. Each drop bends the light as it enters, reflects it inside and bends it again as it leaves.
Because each colour is bent at a slightly different angle, white light separates into bands: red on the outside, violet on the inside. The bow is always part of a circle centred on the point opposite the Sun.
